How are Facial Veins Treated?

The quickest and easiest way to treat unwanted facial veins is with a laser. Various modalities may be used to treat facial veins, including Electrocautery, Vascular IPL, Diolite and YAG lasers. This advanced technology allows us to precisely target the dilated blood vessels without harming the surrounding skin. During treatment, we will direct the light energy into the vein. This energy will heat the blood vessels, and gradually your body will reabsorb them until they disappear.

What are Facial Veins?

Facial veins are dilated blood vessels that affect 40% of the population. They are common on the cheeks and nose, but can appear anywhere on the face.

They frequently emerge on men and women and people with the following conditions or risk factors are more likely to experience them:

  • Rosacea
  • Fair skin
  • A family history of facial veins
  • Sun damage
  • Hormonal changes due to puberty, pregnancy or menopause

What to Expect During Your Treatment

When you arrive at the Paradise Valley Skin Klinic™ for your facial vein treatment, we will guide you to your private treatment room and review exactly what to expect during the procedure. From there, you will rest comfortably in the treatment chair and we will give you goggles to protect your eyes from the light of the laser. A topical anesthetic is applied prior to treatment to ensure your comfort.

The appointment will last anywhere from 15 minutes to one hour, depending on how many veins you’re treating. During the procedure, we will use the laser energy to heat and destroy the unwanted blood vessels, so that your body can easily clear them away. This process is not typically described as being painful, although some patients do report some temporary discomfort secondary to the heat of the laser.

After Treatment

Because the laser only targets your unwanted facial veins, side effects are minimal. After your procedure, you may feel swelling, redness or tenderness in the treatment area. More rarely, discoloration and moderate blistering can occur. All of these effects are temporary and can be minimized by applying ice. Within four to six weeks, your body will have completed the reabsorption process. At that point, your results will be apparent – with clear, smooth skin where your vein used to be. Depending upon the extent of your facial veins more than one treatment may be required.
