The Brazilian butt lift is a surgical procedure that improves the firmness, shape and volume of the buttocks.

What is a Brazilian butt lift?

This procedure, also called a fat transfer to the buttocks - can produce a pleasing, natural and full rear through a combination of liposuction and fat transfer. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and takes between one and three hours to complete.

Fat transfer involves harvesting fat from one area of the body like the abdomen, hips or thighs — and then preparing and injecting it into the buttocks. Fat is collected through very small incisions that are about one-quarter inch in length and well concealed. The fat will be injected in very small amounts above, below and into the gluteal muscles to produce a smooth and curved appearance, tighten the skin, and naturally lift sagging and wrinkled tissue.

The procedure

The Brazilian butt lift is broken down into three stages: anesthesia, liposuction and fat injection. Here’s a look at what to expect each step of the way:

Step 1: Anesthesia

Immediately before your procedure, we will administer medications to ensure your comfort and safety. The Brazilian butt lift is done under general anesthesia, which means you will be completely asleep and unable to remember anything from the surgery.

Step 2: Liposuction

During the liposuction phase, Dr. Shapiro will make small incisions in the target area. He will then insert a cannula through the openings, moving it back and forth to break up and suction out the unwanted fat for the procedure. Liposuction for a Brazilian butt lift can be performed anywhere on the body, but it is most often done on the hips, back, thighs and abdomen.

Step 3: Fat injections

The fat that was removed via liposuction will be processed to prepare it for injections. Dr. Shapiro will then transfer the fat to your buttocks through a series of strategically placed injections.

The recovery

Many patients experience mild swelling, discomfort, and bruising after their Brazilian butt lift. These side effects typically resolve within one to two weeks. Stitches placed during the liposuction phase of the procedure will be removed one week later.

Most patients are able to return to work within seven to ten days. A special compression garment will be worn for the first month to support the new contours and help minimize swelling.

Patients should avoid exercise and sitting directly on the buttocks for about two weeks. Sleeping on the side or stomach is best during this time.

The results

Dr. Shapiro customizes all of his procedures to each patient’s needs, goals and desires. With that said, you can expect a behind that is perkier, firmer, and rounder – and looks beautifully at home on your body. In addition, you will experience visible slimming benefits in the areas where liposuction was performed. The results are visible immediately, but will not be considered final until about one year after surgery, when the injected fat has settled.

The Brazilian butt lift produces very long-lasting results, as the transferred fat establishes a blood supply and thrives. As long as you continue to eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly, the results of your procedure can endure for years.

Is there any scarring involved?

The Brazilian butt lift results in very limited scarring. Tiny scars will be present at the liposuction incision sites, but they will fade with time. We will provide you with a topical scar gel to aid in this healing process.

Practice Policy Update Regarding COVID-19

Dear Patients:

Your safety is our number one priority. Please know that we join our community in taking advised precautions to limit the spread of the Coronavirus. For the time being we are planning on continuing practice as usual, with some additional precautions.

We have always routinely wiped down our office and patient exam chairs with medical-grade sanitizing wipes. We will expand this to include door knobs, toilet and faucet handles and will have hand-sanitizer available to you at check-in.

No staff will be allowed to come to work with a cough or fever, or if they have had contact with anyone with confirmed Coronavirus. We kindly ask for the same considerations from you. If you have any flu-like symptoms or have recently traveled, please call the office to reschedule your appointment.

We appreciate your flexibility as we will be limiting routine follow-up appointments over the next few weeks and ask patients to not bring friends and family members to their appointments to avoid the amount of patients we have in the office at one time. If you have any questions, comments or concerns please call and let us know.

Sincerely, Daniel Shapiro MD, FACS
