There are many reasons to consider revision surgery, including:

  • Changes in the breasts over time or complications from prior surgery can be fixed by revision surgery.
  • Some women feel their breasts were not reduced enough during the first surgery, or the breasts may still sit too low.
  • While surgeons attempt to reduce the appearance of scars during surgery, the body can heal unpredictably. A revision procedure can correct the appearance of scars.
  • Undesirable results like asymmetry or the breasts looking larger rather than smaller can be fixed with revision surgery.
  • Breasts were made too small.

Whether you have badly placed scars or you are unhappy with the symmetry of your breasts, Dr. Shapiro can help.

Breast Reduction RevisionOptions and Consultation

Some women find their breasts are now too small after a reduction. In this case, Dr. Shapiro can perform augmentation to place saline or silicone implants. Fat transfer to the breasts is also an option with very long-term or even permanent results using your own body fat. If too little breast tissue was removed, Dr. Shapiro will revise the procedure by removing additional skin and tissue. In the case of significant scars, Dr. Shapiro can remove old, thickened scars and close the incisions as they should have been original. There are many ways in which a reduction procedure can be revised.

Dr. Shapiro will discuss your options during your initial consultation that are based on your goals and desired outcome. During the consultation, discuss the results you are hoping for with Dr. Shapiro. I may help to bring in pictures of what you hope to achieve so Dr. Shapiro can work with you to create a customized surgery plan. Dr. Shapiro will also discuss the details of your surgery and answer any questions you have, including the cost of the procedure. Dr. Shapiro understands that one surgery is hard enough and it can be emotionally and physically draining to contemplate a revision procedure. He will ensure you achieve the desired results from your procedure.

Recovery from Revision Breast Surgery

Most patients feel sore and swollen for the first few days. The recovery from the revision breast reduction procedure is generally much easier and shorter, however. Most women return to their normal routine within one to two weeks. Dr. Shapiro will prescribe oral pain medication to make the recovery period more comfortable.

You may see a noticeable change after surgery, although swelling for the first week or two may make it difficult to see your final results. During the first two weeks, it is best to sleep with your upper body elevated to relieve pressure on the breasts and reduce swelling.
