An introduction to the upper facial structure

The upper part of the face consists of the eyebrows and forehead, where the skin tends to lose elasticity. As we age, the upper facial skin often develops permanent lines that can make the face seem tired or worn. Because there are no other features on the upper third of the face except a large expanse of skin, these lines are very apparent. In Scottsdale, Arizona, women and men over 35 typically begin requesting this particular procedure.

Why a brow lift?

Your face should reflect your youthful spirit. If it doesn’t, a brow lift can reduce forehead creases and restore a smooth appearance. Wrinkles are the result of many factors that wreak havoc on the skin, including decreased collagen production and years of sun exposure.

A brow lift relaxes these wrinkles to give your face a gentle and rested appearance, rather than an angry or exhausted look.  This procedure may be performed on its own or with other facial rejuvenation procedures, such as a facelift or blepharoplasty, for a combined effect of restoring the whole face.

His: The forehead lift for men

A handsome man has a strong, smooth forehead that does not look angry due to deep wrinkles or sagging eyelids. The eyebrows should run straight across the brow bone. If the eyebrows descend any farther, the eyelids are impeded and he looks tired. Dr. Shapiro offers a customized brow lift in Scottsdale & Phoenix for men to address telltale signs of aging. The forehead lift will return the eyebrows to their higher position on the brow bone, but not so high that they appear feminine while allowing the muscles of the forehead to relax for smoother skin.

Hers: The brow lift for women

Women experience significant pressure to appear young and beautiful. A woman’s face should be gentle and smooth, with eyebrows that arch above the brow bone.

If the eyebrows are too low, she appears concerned, while eyebrows that are too high make her seem abnormally alarmed or excited. A brow lift, or browplasty, can relax the wrinkles on a woman’s forehead and restore her youthful beauty.

Brow Lift Before & After

Patient is a 53-year-old female who underwent a previous browlift and upper and lower blepharoplasty 15 years prior to presentation. 15 years post-operatively she felt that her eyes looked puffy and ill-defined and lacked the “sexy” appearance they had before her initial eyelid surgery. She felt that her brows had descended and wanted the arched eyebrows that always accentuated her lovely eyes. She wanted to appear younger and more attractive.

Your Surgical Options

Depending on your aesthetic goals and signs of aging, Dr. Shapiro may recommend an endoscopic, open, or lateral temporal approach. Here’s what you need to know about your options:

Endoscopic brow lift

This brow lift is Dr. Shapiro’s go-to technique for many of our Scottsdale clients. An endoscopic lift is designed for patients with a minimal to moderate quantity and depth of wrinkles. This is a very reliable and time-tested procedure with predictable results. An endoscopic forehead lift is a minimally-invasive procedure that results in very little swelling or bruising. Inconspicuous incisions will be made in the scalp and hidden along the hairline. This means very few scars will remain and it will be difficult for even the patient to notice them. Endoscopic procedures offer a very fast recovery time. Surgical sutures are typically removed within ten days. At this point, most patients feel comfortable socializing and returning to work and normal activities.

Open brow lift

An open or coronal browplasty is a specialized procedure designed for patients with heavy skin and/or deep wrinkles, which are common among men. Deep wrinkles between the eyebrows and in the mid-forehead region may be lifted using this technique. As with the endoscopic procedure, the open forehead lift requires incisions placed on the top of the scalp, which means minimal, discreet scarring. With a larger incision, Dr. Shapiro can directly correct muscles that are responsible for wrinkles. This procedure is more powerful and delivers more dramatic results than the endoscopic approach. While it is slightly more invasive, patients are typically discharged to return home after the procedure. The recovery time is about ten days, and most patients experience very little swelling or bruising.

The non-surgical brow lift

While some patients benefit most from the standard surgery, many can achieve their aesthetic goals with a non-surgical approach. Rather than manipulating and trimming away excess skin, this non-invasive procedure uses fillers to smooth the forehead.

A non-surgical brow lift is designed to temporarily:

  • Elevate the eyebrow
  • Create an open expression
  • Address frown lines and forehead creases

Results are typically noticeable within a few days and can last six to nine months, though they can be maintained with follow-up injections. This quick procedure is ideal for patients with early signs of facial aging.

The surgical process

The non-surgical brow lift procedure is done in the comfort of our Skin Klinic and requires no downtime. Depending on your needs, we may use several dermal fillers to achieve your desired results.

Traditionally, Botox or Dysport injections are used to prevent the underlying muscles from performing key movements that create lines. Some patients may also benefit from long-lasting fillers like Radiesse or Sculptra. These injections fill in sunken areas to create a smooth surface texture while stimulating collagen production beneath the surface.

Lateral temporal brow lift

This minimally-invasive procedure is designed to lift the corners of the eyes. Through discreet incisions placed along the temporal hairline, Dr. Shapiro will tighten the skin and smooth away the crow’s feet and other lines in the delicate eye area.
