The Erbium laser is a precise, highly-effective technology that removes the damaged outer layers of your skin for dramatic resurfacing results.

What is the Erbium Laser?

The Erbium laser treatment removes the surface layers of your skin, where wrinkles, lines, pigmentation and other imperfections exist.

  • Treats aging skin on the face, neck, back, chest, and hands
  • FDA-approved for smoothing fine lines and moderate wrinkles
  • Safe and effective for many patients

How Does the Technology Work?

The Erbium laser targets the epidermis – otherwise known as the outer layer of your skin. By removing this tissue, it reveals the smooth, youthful layer that exists just beneath the surface. The process also stimulates the production of fresh collagen, which delivers additional skin tightening benefits.

Is the Erbium laser safe?

Yes, when administered by a plastic surgeon experienced in skin resurfacing procedures, the Erbium laser is an extremely safe and effective way to treat fine lines and wrinkles. When compared to alternatives on the market, it refreshes your skin with fewer side effects and a shorter recovery period.

How to Prepare for Laser Resurfacing

There are several steps that you will need to take to prepare your body for Erbium laser resurfacing. To begin, you will need to stop taking any medications and supplements that may affect clotting – including aspirin and ibuprofen for at least ten days. You will also need to stop smoking for two weeks before and after the procedure, as cigarettes can negatively impact your healing process.

Prescription medications will be given prior to treatment to make sure we avoid cold sores or fever blisters as well as a preventive antibiotic to avoid an infection at all costs. You will meet with Dr. Shapiro and one of our experienced aestheticians to “pre-treat” your skin with prescription strength skincare products prior to your treatments to achieve optimal results.

The Procedure

In most cases Your Erbium laser resurfacing procedure will be done as a quick procedure under general anesthesia in the operating room for optimal patient comfort. The length of your procedure will depend on the size of the treatment area, typically taking 45 – 60 minutes.

The Recovery

As with any laser resurfacing procedure, the recovery period after your Erbium treatment is critical. This is when your body heals and your fresh skin emerges.

Here’s what to expect:

  • Most patients are able to resume their normal daily routine in about one week
  • Your skin will appear pink, red and swollen for a few days after the procedure
  • Some swelling, itching and stinging in the treatment area is common
  • Apply your ointment as directed, never allowing the treated area to dry out
