Studies Show More Men Are Getting Plastic Surgery

When it comes to plastic surgery, the majority of patients are female. However, recent reports show that more men are electing to have cosmetic procedures done, with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reporting that plastic surgery among men increased by 16 percent from 2000 to 2011 nationally. About 9 percent of cosmetic procedures were performed annually on men between 2008 and 2011, the society said.

This Today Show clip offers great insights and statistics about the growing number of men seeking plastic surgery. 14 percent of Botox injections, 15 percent of all liposuction and eyelid surgeries, and 24 percent of nose jobs are carried out on men. Clearly our male counterparts want to improve their appearance, but there has been a stigma surrounding men who seek cosmetic procedures, as they think they should be able to get results on their own in the gym.

However, there are some problems that can’t be solved with countless hours lifting weights or exercising. One particular male body issue that is common is enlarged breasts, which can be a source of shame and embarrassment. Whether this condition occurs in adolescence or in adult years, there are procedures available to restore a more masculine and proportional chest. Ultrasonic liposuction, or VASER, can be used alone in the majority of cases of enlarged breasts in men to remove underlying fibrous tissue and help contract excess skin to promote a flat chest with muscular definition.

For male patients that desire a more youthful appearance, there are a variety of facial procedures available. A brow lift can address deep furrows between the eyebrows, deep lines across the brow, or sagging eyebrows, which can contribute to looking angry or fatigued. Eyelid surgery, or a blepharoplasty, is another very common procedure removes unwanted skin and fat that causes puffiness in the upper eyes, and bags in the lower eyes.

Regardless of gender, everyone has the right to feel confident in the way they look. If you are a man seeking an improvement in your appearance, contact Dr. Shapiro’s office today to see how you can look and feel better with cosmetic surgery.
