Self-Conscious about Your Ears? Otoplasty May Be The Answer!

If you’ve suffered ridicule over the years because of the size or position of your ears or are just too self conscious about your ears to wear a ponytail or baseball cap, you’re by no means alone. Prominent ears is an extremely common condition and one that can be corrected with an effective and relatively simple procedure called otoplasty.

Also called pinning or ear contouring, otoplasty is used to reshape, reform, or reposition the ears to make them less conspicuous. While this procedure is often performed on children with large or protruding ears before they reach school age to prevent teasing and name-calling, many adults also choose otoplasty to reduce their self-consciousness over the look of their ears.

Too much cartilage in the concha, the bowl shaped portion of the ear is usually the cause of prominent ears, and otoplasty can be used to shape and position them to achieve a more balanced look. The common procedure doesn’t affect hearing and can be performed both under general anesthesia (especially for children) or local anesthesia and sedatives (adults and older children).

Post procedure, most patients are mobile within just a few hours of surgery and back to normal activity in about a week. Scarring is minimal. Please contact Shapiro Plastic Surgery if you’d like to schedule a personal consultation with Dr. Shapiro to discuss ear contouring surgery for either yourself or your child.
