Is a Fat Transfer Right For You?

We all have areas of fat on our bodies we would love to get rid of. However, as we age, there are also portions of our bodies, particularly our faces that, believe it or not, could use some extra fat. This is because our faces become hollow as we age, making us look older than we really are. The solution? A fat transfer. Fat transfer is the use of your own body fat as a soft tissue filler to add volume and contour to specific areas of the body. The tissue is generally taken from areas where contour can be improved by removing fat, such as the stomach, knees, or thighs.

Currently, the most common place for fat transfer is to the face (click here to view before and after photos). There are multiple areas of the face where fat can be injected, with the creation of youthful volume and contour, with the added benefit of skin rejuvenation that makes areas look both smoother and enhanced. By taking a look at pictures of yourself years ago, or considering areas of your facet hat you have always wanted to be a bit fuller, you can see what fat transfer to the face can do for you. Areas that commonly benefit from fat transfer to the face:

Fat Transfer to the Temples and Forehead

Areas such as the temples and forehead commonly lose volume resulting in hollowed temples and overly prominent brows that make the bones appear more prominent. Temporal hollows seem to occur in both men and women as they reach 40 years old, and can be a subtle change that one cannot fully appreciate the effects on facial aesthetics. From these changes, one can look weak and appear much older than they are. Adding fat to these areas impart youthful fullness that blends with the rest of the face, with the added benefit of lifting the brow without a surgical browlift.

Fat Transfer to the Cheeks

Full cheeks generally make a person look very youthful, and as we age, or as the result of weight loss, cheeks become hollow making one look gaunt. Actually, with age our face “deflates” and this is one of the major causes of facial aging. By performing fat transfer to cheeks, youthful voluptuousness and contour is recreated, while simultaneously drastically improving skin quality.

Fat Transfer Under Eyes

Fat transfer to both upper and lower eyes is a very common procedure to treat hollowing that occurs with aging, or as a result of previous cosmetic eyelid surgery where too much fat was removed. Hollowing of these areas causes the surrounding bones to become more apparent, and make a person appear much older and more fatigued than they really are. This hollowing can make wrinkles and dark pigmentation more prominent, only making matters appear worse. Fat transfer below and above the eyes is a very precise procedure that injects fat in extremely small passes onto the orbital bones and surrounding tissues to fill the hollowing, and camouflage bones which helps areas appear much more youthful and less fatigued.
