Breast Augmentation Series: Implant Position & Incision Location

Once you have determined what type of implant and what size is best for you, you must decide where the implant will be placed. There are two positions the breast implant can be placed, either under the breast tissue and over the pectoral muscles, or under both the breast tissue and pectoral muscle.

The majority of patients choose to have the implants placed under the pectoral muscle, allowing more tissue to cover the implant.  This results in a more natural feeling and appearance of the breast. Implants placed beneath the muscle also have a lower rate of complication and capsular contraction.

There are also a few different places that incisions can be made. It can be placed in the underarm, around the areola, or under the breast at the inframammary crease. Dr. Shapiro prefers to place the incision at the breast crease, as it gives the greatest control in achieving the desired breast volume and shape. The scar is also very well hidden in the natural crease of the breast. If you have a different preference, Dr. Shapiro will gladly discuss the different incision options with you.
