Getting Rid of Your Chubby Cheeks Through Surgery

Chubby Cheeks and Surgery

There’s a reason that strong cheekbones are considered an attractive trait – they contribute to the overall contouring of your face. When your cheekbones aren’t well-defined, your face loses a little bit of its definition and overall balance. Some people have cheeks that are somewhat flat; they usually require some sort of augmentation to improve them. Other people have the exact opposite problem – cheeks that are too prominent. Cheeks can become rounder and chubbier over time, giving you a rounder and chubbier face. This problem can be improved with plastic surgery.

Buccal Fat Pads

You have a layer of fat all over your body, including your face. When extra fat deposits build in different areas, they make your figure lose tone and definition. The same is true for your cheeks. There is actually a specific area of fat inside your cheek known as the buccal fat pad. It’s present from the time you are a baby; that’s why babies often have chubby cheeks! Some people are able to lose that fat pad as they get older, but for others it sticks around even through to adulthood.

Fat Pad Removal

Surgically removing the buccal fat pads can get rid of the puffy chubby cheeks or at least improve the overall contouring of your face. The procedure is fairly simple to perform. It starts with small incisions on the inside of your cheek towards the back of your mouth. The fat is gently removed from inside the cheek and then the incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures.

Your cheeks will be a little swollen and sore for a few days, so you may not see the results of the procedure right away, but they will become more obvious over time. The best thing about this procedure is that the incisions are made on the inside of your mouth, which means that there will be no external scarring. Another great thing is that injuries to the inside of your mouth heal very quickly, so you’ll be completely recovered in about two weeks. For the first few days you’ll be on a strict soft food and liquid diet while the incisions start to heal, and you’ll be given a special antibiotic mouthwash to prevent any bacteria or infection.

If you have an especially round face caused by chubby cheeks, you may be helped with a buccal fat pad removal procedure. To learn more, call (480) 451-1700 or provide your information through our Contact page to schedule a patient consultation with Dr. Shapiro.
