Arizona Breast Procedures
Dr. Shapiro performs several breast procedures in Scottsdale, ranging from enhancement to correction of prior surgeries.
Breast enhancement surgery can be beneficial for women who wish to improve the symmetry, shape or size of their breasts. This procedure uses silicone or saline breast implants placed beneath or above the pectoral muscle to produce fuller and firmer breasts. There are many reasons women may opt for this procedure, including small or asymmetrical breasts, lost breast volume after pregnancy or weight loss or to improve self-esteem.
Breast augmentation results in a gradual recovery, with most patients returning to work after five days. Light exercise may be resumed after one or two weeks, with full recovery taking about five to six weeks.
Not all breast surgery produces the desired results. Women who have undergone breast surgery in the past and are unhappy with their results may turn to Dr. Shapiro for revision breast surgery. This procedure can change the placement, projection or size of breast implants, make the breasts appear more symmetrical, change the appearance of the breasts, correct complications from previous surgery, or address the visibility of scars.
There are many reasons women decide to exchange their implants, including leaking or ruptured implants, scar tissue, changing the implant position, changing the size of the implants or switching from saline to silicone (or vice verca). The exact technique will depend on the correction desired, but this procedure can be very straightforward with very little downtime in many cases.
Patients who desire a less invasive type of breast enhancement that avoids the potential risks and complications of breast implants may benefit from fat transfer. This procedure uses the patient’s own body fat, which is harvested from an undesirable area like the thighs or stomach, so it may be transferred to the breasts. This procedure is suitable for women who want a mild to moderate increase in cup size. There will be no scarring of the breasts, and the results are very long-lasting or even permanent.
A mastopexy is a procedure the restores the youthful position to the breasts following pregnancy, weight loss or natural aging. This surgery restores the breasts by removing excess skin and tissue while decreasing the size of the areolas. The breasts are returned to their higher position and perkiness. This procedure is often performed in conjunction with breast enhancement to improve the firmness and fullness of the breasts. There are several techniques that may be used, depending on the severity of breast sagging.
A reduction mammaplasty is a procedure that may be done for purely cosmetic reasons or to relieve back, neck and shoulder pain. Women with overly large breasts that are disproportionate to the body or are a source of pain may be a candidate for this procedure the reduces the size of the breasts and reshapes them. This surgery usually lasts three to fie hours and may be performed using one of several techniques, depending on the size of the breasts and the degree of sagging. This procedure has a very high satisfaction rate and can be truly life-changing.
Reduction surgery can produce undesirable results. Women may choose to have their breast surgery revised if there have been changes in the breasts over time, the breasts were not sufficiently reduced during the first surgery, the breasts were made too small,or the breasts appear asymmetrical.
Gynecomastia is a condition in which men develop female-like breasts. Enlarged breasts affect up to 60% of men and may cause substantial self-confidence issues and be a source of embarassment. Male breast reduction is typically performed using VASER liposuction for men who have excess fatty tissue in the breasts. For patients with “true” gynecomastia, in which hard glandular tissue develops, incisions will be required to excise the glands and, in some cases, excess skin.
Nipple reduction surgery is an option for women and men with overly large nipple-areolar complexes. This procedure restores self-confidence by reducing the size and shape of the nipple and/or areola. This surgery corrects asymmetrical, long or prominent nipples, while restoring balance between the nipples and the chest. There are several techniques used to perform this surgery, depending on the type of correction needed, and recovery is typically very short.
