Loose or sagging skin on the thighs can detract from your appearance and cause rubbing or discomfort or a lack of confidence in shorts or a swimsuit. Age, genetics or significant weight loss can cause this concern in the thighs. A thigh lift procedure helps correct the situation by lifting the skin, tightening and reshaping the tissues and creating a smoother, firmer contour.

How is a thigh lift performed?

The first step is a consultation with Dr. Shapiro. He will examine you and discuss your concerns and goals for the procedure. During consultation he will decide with you which type of thigh lift will be best for you based on your unique needs.

There are several types of thigh lifts that may be done in order to provide the best outcome. Depending on which type you are receiving, Dr. Shapiro will usually make the incision either at the top of the leg, about at the lower edge of your underwear line, or from the groin to the crease of the buttock.

Regardless of which type of thigh lift you’re having, at the beginning of your procedure, you will be put under general anesthesia.

  • Vertical thighplasty
A vertical thighplasty is a procedure Dr. Shapiro utilizes to create a smoother, firmer contour of the full inner thigh by removing excess skin and fat.
  • Inner thigh lift
During this procedure, Dr. Shapiro will tighten the skin of your upper inner thighs, lift the tissues and firm your thighs. This often achieves the “thigh gap” that many people want.
  • Outer thigh lift
The outer thigh lift procedure is designed to remove excess fat and sagging skin from the outer thighs. This procedure does involve a longer incision from the middle thigh to the knee, but the procedure can produce outstanding results, lifting the entire thigh and buttock.

Once the procedure is complete, Dr. Shapiro uses deep sutures to keep the tissues firm. He will place drains to allow excess fluid to drain after surgery. The sutures will be removed in a few days.

Recovery

Regardless of which type of thigh lift procedure you had, you will need between 1-2 weeks of time to rest and recuperate. Try to keep your legs elevated as much as you can during this time. In the first few days, there will be quite a bit of bruising and swelling, which will ease over the next weeks, but will take about a month to dissipate completely.

Do not do any rigorous exercise, heavy lifting or anything more than light, sedentary work until 4-6 weeks have passed. Dr. Shapiro will give you an okay for this type of activity once you are fully healed.

There will be visible scars from the incisions but these are not usually very noticeable. Dr. Shapiro will do everything he can to keep the scarring minimal and inconspicuous so that your appearance is as ideal and smooth as possible.

Thigh lift candidates

Men and women with loose, sagging skin on their thighs may be ideal candidates for a thigh lift. Candidates should meet the following requirements:

  • You would like to have firmer, smoother, leaner thighs
  • You are at a stable weight you feel you can maintain
  • You are generally healthy and have no major medical issues
  • You do not smoke
  • You have realistic goals for what this surgery can accomplish for you

Results

The results of your thigh lift are almost immediately noticeable. Once you are fully healed, you’ll be able to see the final results. This may take a few months. It is worth the wait, however. The results are firmer, tighter, smoother skin and more sculpted, contoured thighs.

The results are long term, but do keep in mind that your thighs will change slowly over time as you age.To ensure the results last for as long as possible, maintain a stable weight and a healthy level of fitness.

Practice Policy Update Regarding COVID-19

Dear Patients,

It is with great pleasure that I announce the reopening of my practice for both surgical and non-surgical services on May 1, 2020. As per the governor Ducey's executive order on April 22, 2020, elective surgery has been allowed to proceed, with appropriate precautions taken by health care professionals to ensure continued vigilance against the spread of Covid-19.

Our office staff and the staff of Paradise Valley Cosmetic Surgery Center and Surgical Recovery Center have proactively taken necessary precautions to meet strict criterion for health providers according to the state of Arizona. These include necessary patient screening for Covid-19, strict protocols for cleaning offices and treatment rooms, adequate PPE, and continued social distancing. As before, waiting areas will have minimal capacity, and friends and family members should not accompany one into offices or treatment areas.

With great anticipation we welcome you back to the practice, and wish you all continued health and safety.

Sincerely, Daniel Shapiro MD, FACS
