Fat Transfer

Fat transfer is the use of a patient's own body fat as a soft tissue filler to add volume and contour to specific areas of the body. The tissue is generally taken from areas where contour can be improved by removing fat, such as the abdomen, knees, or thighs. The most common areas for fat injection are the lips, beneath the lower eyelids to fill hollows, and along the browline. It is also common to fill the lips, cheeks, jawline, and chin, and to augment the angle of the lower jaw. Fat transfer is often used in the rest of the body to add volume and shape, especially to the buttocks, breasts, and to remedy contour irregularities from previous liposuction, most commonly in the thighs.

The science behind fat transfer

It is important to understand the science behind the fat transfer procedure. The tissues are not transferred simply as inorganic fillers, but rather as tissue that has the capability to maintain living cells and long-term enhancement. To promote the permanence of as much transferred fat as possible, strict protocols are followed for every patient. These steps include delicate handling of the removed fat, careful centrifuging, and injection in very small quantities until the desired contour is achieved. This process is very detailed and time consuming, but well worth the effort to promote long term enhancement for every Scottsdale patient

Stem cell enrichment

An added benefit of fat transfer is the stem cells that are alive in fat tissues, and believed to be the greatest source in the body. Stem cells are really just cells that have the capability to be any cell they like, and when injected into any part of the body, will act like cells they are surrounded by. When injected in the face, stem cells act like facial fat and skin, or when injected in the breasts or buttocks, they act like they have belonged there all along. Specifically in the face, stem cells have been shown to actually make the skin look younger and more vibrant, by improving skin tone and elasticity, decreasing wrinkles and the size of pores, improving stretch marks and adding luminance to a sun-damaged face. Kind of sounds like the fountain of youth doesn’t it!
