A SMAS face lift is a type of rhytidectomy that involves the repositioning of the deeper tissue layers of the face to produce a very natural appearing and long lasting result. The SMAS layer of the face is the layer of tissue that contains the facial muscles and the overlying facial fat and skin. These layers become lax with age, resulting in deep folds around the mouth and sagging facial fat that cause jowls and loss of jawline definition.
This procedure elevates and fixates these layers to a more youthful position, providing definition to the cheekbones, better contour of the cheeks, and a crisper jawline. As the skin is not pulled with this type of surgery, patients avoid the dreaded “wind-swept” look that screams of surgery. Because there is not tension on the skin, a SMAS lift appears softer and more natural, and has a much longer lasting result.
Benefits of this procedure:
• Appear up to ten years younger
• Longer-lasting results
• Corrects jowls, nasolabial folds, hollow cheeks and loose neck bands
• Addresses the deeper structural layers of the face for improved results
SMAS Face Lift Procedure
This procedure involves the same scars as other types of facelifts, but entails more intricate and sophisticating surgical techniques to elevate the deeper layers of the face. The skin of the cheeks and front of the neck is comprised of three layers: the superficial epideral-dermal layer, subcutaneous fat, and a gliding connective tissue membrane known as the superficial musculo-aponeurotic system, or SMAS. It has many fibrous extensions attached to the fat layer to the upper layer of the skin.
Generally only those surgeons with years of experience, having performed hundreds of facial lifts, feel comfortable with these more advanced techniques. Dr. Shapiro of Scottsdale is a SMAS facelift expert. As all layers of the face are rejuvenated, tension is directed away from the skin, resulting in extremely natural results with imperceptible scars.
During surgery, the three-layer unit of facial and neck skin is freed to the SMAS layer. All three layers may then be lifted upward, with tension placed on the underlying layer. By tightening the SMAS layer, the cheeks are lifted, the jawline given more definition and the neck is firmed.
The skin will then be pulled back and any excess skin will be removed. Incisions will be closed and stitches placed within the hairline so they are well concealed. This procedure typically takes two to four hours, depending on the extend of the correction needed.
Recovery from this procedure is typically rapid and most patients feel comfortable socializing 10 to 14 days after surgery While some downtime is expected, most patients resume normal activities after one week.
The results from this procedure are both more natural and longer lasting than other types of rhytidectomies. Dr. Shapiro is a Scottsdale SMAS rhytidectomy expert, he only performs facial lifts utilizing this technique, and is committed to provide patients with the most beautiful, natural, and long lasting results with imperceptible scars that provide the ability to have complete confidence in their new, more youthful appearance.

Good candidates will have mild to moderate loss of muscle tone and skin elasticity of the neck or face, wrinkles in the lower third of the face and jowls or deep nasolabial folds (wrinkles running from the base of the nose to the corners of the mouth).
